Investigative Question or Issue: Between 1873 and 1945, many people diagnosed with tuberculosis traveled to Saranac Lake for treatment. Why did the health of these people improve?  How did the influx of people affect the population and economy of the region?

Challenge:  
Students will each create a poster that can be used to advertise the Saranac Lake Cure Cottages for tuberculosis.  These posters will be presented to the class with a short description of their creation. They will then be posted in the fifth grade wing.

Context for this Challenge:
     This challenge is meant to help students understand the affect of the Cure Cottages on the population and the economy of the village of Saranac Lake.  They will also discover the healing qualities of this region.
 
To prepare for this Challenge the teacher should:
  • 1)  The teacher will research the Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau and his life before he realized living in Saranac Lake improved his tuberculosis.  The students will then be asked to brainstorm what factors they think were present in Saranac Lake that would improve someone's health.  After this initial discussion, the teacher will present some pictures of Saranac Lake to help them discover the influence of the clean, fresh air, climate and quiet town.
  •  2)  Students will then do research to find more information about the Cure Cottages and the affect on the population and economy of the town.
  • 3)  Students will then to a first draft of their poster before doing their final copy on a piece of poster paper. 

Quality Standards:

  • 1)  The poster will be completed on time.
  • 2)  The poster will be neat and be visually appealing.
  • 3)  The poster will the depict the facts of the time period accurately
  • 4)  The poster will describe several of the factors of Saranac Lake that imporved the health of the people with tuberculosis.
  • 5)  The presentation describes the poster and what it represents.
  • 6)  The poster will have accurate spelling, gammar and word usage.
  • 7)  The poster meets all the Quality Criteria as described and posted in class.
