MST 4.2.1e Rocks are composed of minerals. Only a few rock forming minerals make up most of the rocks on Earth. Minerals are identified on the basis of physical properties.

SS 3.1b Students describe the physical characteristics of the Earth's surface and investigate the continual reshaping of the surface by physical processes and human activities.

Investigative Question or Issue: How have the minerals of the Adirondacks affected the lives of people?

Context for this Challenge: This Challenge is intended as a culminating activity for a mineral unit, after students have completed the "Mineral Identification Lab".

Challenge:  
Research a mineral found in the Adirondacks. The minerals to chose from are iron, magnetite, graphite, garnet, wollastonite, titanium, zinc, feldspar, pyrite, silver, strontium, hematite, lead and talc. Create a coloring book page showing at least two ways the mineral is used.

Quality Standards:

  • The mineral data sheet is accurately completed.
  • The 9x12 drawing shows at least two uses of the mineral.
  • The items included in the picture will make full use of the page and should be drawn in the style of a coloring book page.
  • The coloring page must include the mineral's name neatly printed at the top with its chemical symbol/formula.
  • Includes a sentence at the bottom telling all of the uses for your mineral.
