Investigative Question or Issue: How are minerals of the
Adirondacks used?
Challenge:
The Challenge:
A teacher of second grade students in a school
nearby has asked your class to share your knowledge of minerals with
her students. Knowing that her students love picture books that are
colorful and informative, she has asked that you make pages for a
coloring book that will help her students learn more about minerals
found in the Adirondacks.
As an individual or in pairs arranged with the help of your teacher,
please create a page for the coloring book that features a
mineral found in the Adirondacks. Choose from among the following
minerals: iron, magnetite, graphite, garnet, wollastonite, titanium,
zinc, feldspar, pyrite, silver, strontium, hematite, lead and talc.
Make sure that each of the minerals listed has at least one page
devoted to it in the book.
After conducting research on your selected mineral, create a page for
the coloring book that meets the following guidelines:
- The page is designed in a style typical of a
children's coloring book
- The page is 9 x 12 in size held vertically
- The page includes at least two illustrations
(may have more) each showing a different way that the mineral is used
- The illustrations are neat and make full use
of the space on the page so that they are easy to color
- Each drawing features is accompanied by an
explanation of the use of the mineral being illustrated
- The descriptions on the page are in sentences
using correct grammar and spelling
- The name of the mineral and its chemical
symbol are printed clearly at the top of the page
- All the information featured on the page is
accurate
Please make sure your coloring book page is
completed on time
