Artwork Inspired by Geography

Student Handout

Research an Adirondack artist that has been influenced by the geography that surrounds them. Use that research to either create a piece of artwork in that artist’s style or create a piece inspired by your own geography.

Research

In groups of three, choose an Adirondack artist and get your artist approved before moving forward. Create a power point presentation for the class that contains the following information about your artist of choice.

-A brief biography (where they were born, where they live, art training, etc.).

-Their medium of choice.

-What is the artist trying to communicate? (mood of the work, artist’s interpretation, etc.)

-Your reaction to the artwork. Is the artist effective in communicating their message, what do you or don’t you like about the work, is this artwork and message meaningful?

-Lots and lots of images of their work! Be able to identify the geography depicted in the work.

-Each group member will complete a journal reflection on this artist and their work.

Creation

Individually, use your group research and own personal reaction to the artwork to create a piece that is inspired by geography. These pieces can either incorporate Adirondack geography or you can choose to use local geography that you feel a connection with.

Criteria for the work are as follows.

-Any two dimensional medium that is at least 12”x 12”.

-A short essay explaining your piece. Where this place is, what artist you researched and how this geography has been a place of inspiration.
