Investigative Question or Issue: How has/does geography of
an area affect and/or inspire artists?
Challenge:
As
a group, research an Adirondack artist that had been influenced by
their geographic area. As an individual, use that research to either
create a piece of artwork in that artist’s style or create a piece
inspired by your own geography. Present both the research and your
artwork to the class.

Teaching Notes
Launch this challenge with a slide show of different Adirondack
geographic features and the artwork that has been inspired by them.
As a class discuss the artwork, what's the message, how do you react to
the images, is this message and artwork meaningful? etc.
- Groups will produce and deliver an informative
power point presentation based on their Adirondack artist. The
presentation will address all the requested information and the group
members all will contribute equally.
- Each student will complete an independent
reflection in their journal on the artists work.
- A two dimensional work of art will be created
based either on Adirondack geography or meaningful local geography.
- A short essay will accompany the artwork
explaining the artist they researched, the geography they chose to
represent and their reason for choosing that geographic feature.
- Class critique of presentation and artwork
will conclude the challenge.
