Investigative Question or Issue: How do Adirondack
owls survive?
Challenge:
Context for this Challenge: Prior
to giving this challenge, the
teacher may want to engage the class in a discovery phase activity that
introduces the concept of "habitat" to the students and
helps them understand the "four components" that make up any
habitat (food, shelter, water, and space.)
The Challenge: In
groups of 3 or 4 formed with the help of your teacher, chose a species
of owl that lives in the Adirondacks and is of interest to you. Do some
research to find out how your chosen owl lives. As you research, find
information about each of the following focus questions:
- Where in the Adirondacks does your kind of owl live? What does it
look like where it lives?
- What kind of food does your owl eat? How does it get this food?
- How does your owl shelter itself from the weather?
- How does your owl get water?
Create either a wall mural, a shoebox diorama, a simple flip book, or a
computer generated display that is visually appealing and shows
us what you have learned about your owl. Whatever product you choose to
create, it must accurately model the information you have learned about
the survival needs of your owl regarding each of the focus questions
above.
To make sure we understand what you are trying to show us, please
prepare four written sentences summarizing your answer to each of the
focus questions above. Present this information to the class in
creative way through a poem, a song, a cut and paste paper, or in some
kind of report stye.
We will discuss in class how much time you have to complete this
challenge.
