Investigative Question or Issue: What is to "see and
do" in historic Lake Placid?
Challenge:
Context for this Challenge: Prior to
issuing this challenge the teacher will want to investigate appropriate
web sites to ensure student access to the information required.
The Challenge: In
small teams created with the help of your teacher, create a tourism
pamphlet that will encourage tourists in the region to visit four
different historic places in the area around Lake Placid. Your pamphlet
may put on display in school, local businesses, and at local hotels and
motels, so make it your best work.
You should begin your research for this project be using the
following websites;
www.lakeplacid.com
www.orda.org
www.mapquest.com
In addition to the websites, be sure to check out any professional
pamphlets you can obtain from businesses or tourist information sources
in the area as well as collect data during our Local History Tour.
As gather information for each of the four historical sites you select,
please make sure you address each of these five Focus Questions
questions:
1. Why is this site important in history?
2. What can kids do there?
3. Where is it located?
4. What are the hours/seasons/days of operations?
5. How much does it cost?
Please include a map in your pamplet that shows the location of each
historical site.
Please follow this process as you work on your pamphlet:
1. As you do your research, fill out an Internet Research Questionnaire
2. Complete a rough draft of the pamphlet on yellow paper,
checking for accuracy of facts, spelling, and layout.
3. Meet with your peer conference group before starting a final
draft. You need to show evidence of changes to your draft using
information you received from your peer conference.
4. Construct your final draft pamphlet on the computer, using
appropriate pictures from the internet and properly documenting the
sites.
Your pamphlet will be graded on its originality, quality of writing,
and
accuracy of information and spelling. You will be asked to complete a
Self-Assessment sheet and Scoreboard when you are finished. All team
members are expected to do their fair share of the work.

Quality Standards:
Process Criteria:
- Students fill out Internet Research Questionaire with the information
they discover.
- Students choose four historic destinations and answer the five
key
questions for each destination, using the internet and professional
pamphlets as sources
- Students map the four historic destinations on a map of Lake
Placid to be included in the pamphlet.
- Students choose a format for their pamphlet.
- Students complete their work using the writing process: drafts on
yellow paper, conference with their peer conference groups, and show
evidence of the writing process.
- Students create a final copy of their pamphlet on the computer,
and citing any photographs downloaded from the internet.
- Students complete a Self-Assessment sheet and Scoreboard.
Product Criteria:
- Pamphlet includes accurate information answering the Focus Questions
for each historic location
- Pamphlet includes a map of the area showing accurate travel
information of how to get to each location
- Pamphlet is original in its design and formatting - does not
look exactly like the work of others
- Pamphlet text is written using correct grammar and spelling.
