Investigative Question or Issue: What is fun to do in
the Adirondacks?
Challenge:
Context for this Challenge: Prior to
doing this challenge, students might want to look at a road map of NY
and select a town/city between 50-100 miles away from the Adirondack
Park to serve as their "home town." Students will also need access to
materials/tourist information/travel brochures about Adirondack
attractions, and the like to use a resources for this project.
The Challenge: You
live between 50-100 miles away from the Adirondack Park. A new neighbor
has moved in next door and asked you to recommend someplace in the
Adirondacks that would be fun for their family to visit. You agree to
write-up a suggestion for them.
In teams of two, write a formal letter to your neighbor. The
letter's introduction should
make your neighbor want to visit this location. Give clear
directions for getting to your destination, including route numbers,
cardinal directions (north, south, east, west), and approximate
distances by using the scale of miles.
Tell one feature that will be passed on the way to this
destination. This feature may be natural, such as a lake, or one
created by humans, such as a community.
Using your resource map symbols and the map key for ideas, describe
three activities
that your neighbors might enjoy doing at this destination. You
may also use tourist
guides for additional ideas as well. Include at least 8 details that
will make your neighbor want to visit
this place.
