Investigative Question or Issue: What kinds of
trees grow in the Adirondacks?
Challenge:
Context for this Challenge: The
teacher will want to ensure that students have easy access to the
outdoors to collect appropriate leaf samples
for both coniferous and deciduous trees. Students should be given this
challenge before they go out to collect leaf samples.
The Challenge:
Divide into small groups with the help of your teacher. In your group,
go on the Nature Trail or into the forest and collect samples of leaves
from at least two different types of conifer (coniferous) trees and two
different broad leaf (deciduous) trees.
Create a small book that could be displayed in your classroom. Your
book should have a title page that includes the name of your book, an
attractive ilustration suggesting what your book is about, and the
names of the authors.
Inside your book please create a section of pages for each of the
different trees from which you collected a leaf. Include the following
in each of these sections:
- A descriptive paragragh of the special characteristics of the
tree from which the leaf was collected. Please use the writing process
to write these descriptions.
- An illustration of the tree that shows the special characteristics of
the tree mentioned in your paragraph.
- An illustration of the leaf you collected from the tree you have
Illustrated and written about.
All members of your group should be prepared to discuss the contents of
your book and trees if asked questions about them.
